Health Savings Expert: Who We Are

Health Savings Expert, a program of Advocate Insight, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit built on a simple idea: people living with chronic illness are some of the most qualified experts to help the next person through it all with their hard-won, practical knowledge about affording their care. Everything we share is grounded in real practice, not theory, because it comes from people who have actually lived it, not from research alone. That is also why we see other organizations in this space as partners rather than rivals: our lane is practical, cross-condition financial survival, and there is more than enough need to go around.

We started with one person’s reality. Our founder, Sally Figueroa, lives with both Type 1 Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis and some other conditions. Long before she ever thought about starting an organization, she was doing what millions of people with chronic illness do every day: comparing prescription prices, appealing insurance denials, tracking down financial assistance programs, and learning, often the hard way, that surviving the illness was only half the battle. The other half was surviving the bills.

What Sally noticed, again and again, was that none of this knowledge was written down anywhere so that people could easily find it, benefit and save big. It lived in scattered Facebook groups, in hallway conversations at clinics, across Reddit and Discord servers, in the memory of patients, families & caregivers who had figured something out. There was no Central Hub to share it & Pay It Forward. Every person managing a chronic condition was often starting from zero, solving the same financial puzzles their neighbor had already solved months earlier.

Health Savings Experts exist to close that gap. We collect what real patients, their families and caregivers, have learned, often through years of hard experience, and turn it into free, practical resources that anyone can use. We are not a general wellness brand and we are not here to inspire you with a good attitude. We are here for the specific, unglamorous, absolutely necessary work of helping people afford their care.

Our Story

The organization grew out of a straightforward observation: people managing chronic illness, and the families & caregivers supporting them, were already doing the work of figuring out how to afford care. They just had no shared, trustworthy place to pool what they were learning. Sally began sharing her own strategies publicly, first informally, then through social, video and written content. The response made it clear this was not a niche problem. It was a shared one, spanning conditions, income levels, geography, and entire households.

As the community grew, so did the range of contributors. Healthcare experts, billing advocates, caregivers, and people living with other chronic conditions began adding their own knowledge to the collection. What started as one person’s playbook became a shared library, and eventually, a movement large enough to formalize as a nonprofit. Registering as a 501(c)(3) lets us do what a personal project never could: build lasting partnerships, apply for grants and philanthropic support, and make clear to everyone who visits that our only mission is service, not sales.

Why Real Stories Matter More Than Ever

Anyone can find generic advice about healthcare costs, especially in the AI age. What is rare is learning from real stories: a specific person describing exactly what they tried, what worked, what did not, and what it actually saved them. That kind of detail cannot be generated by AI or algorithms. It has to be lived and then shared.

Our Health Savings Experts Central Hub exists to make that sharing easy, and to make those stories easy to find again. Every story is tied to a real person, reviewed before it is published, and organized so the next person facing the same bill or the same denial does not have to search for it. Real stories are not a feature of what we do. They are the foundation everything else is built on, including the savings, tools, and resources on this site.

Mission

Family discussing health insurance tips while reviewing their healthcare savings at home

To turn real, lived stories of chronic illness into practical, shareable savings, so no patient, family member, or caregiver has to navigate the cost of care alone. We also believe there is real value in the act of sharing itself. Talking about what you have gone through, what helped, what did not, and what you wish you had known sooner is validating on its own, and it is often the first step toward finding a solution.

Vision

A world where managing a chronic illness never means going broke because of it, and where no family navigates that cost alone. In the words of a patient, “one dollar saved is one less stress on my body”. We also envision Health Savings Experts as a safe place where people are seen and validated simply for sharing what they have been through, because mental health is directly tied to overall health, and healing is rarely only financial.

Who We Help

Our community is built around anyone managing the financial reality of chronic illness, whether they are the patient, a family member, or a caregiver. We focus particularly on Type 1 Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis, mental health conditions, and endometriosis, and our resources also reach people living with autoimmune disease, neurological conditions, rare disorders, chronic pain, and any condition that comes with ongoing medication needs, frequent labs or imaging, or a history of insurance denials.

What connects everyone we serve is not a single diagnosis or a single role in a household. It is the shared experience of being financially stretched by a body, or a loved one’s body, that requires ongoing care, and being tired of figuring it out alone. If you have ever opened a hospital bill and felt your stomach drop, whether it was your bill or your child’s, your own denial or your spouse’s, you are exactly who this organization was built for.

How Health Savings Experts Work To Save You Money

We call our own support system and community “the Village.” It includes patients, family members, and caregivers who have lived the experience firsthand, healthcare professionals who understand the systems from the inside, and partner organizations working toward the same goal from different angles. The Village is also how we are building lasting, recurring support for this work: a named community of people who share their savings tips regularly, so the Central Hub can keep collecting and verifying real stories instead of relying on one-time gifts alone. We will be sharing more about how to join the Village soon.

We are working toward a future where the financial knowledge usually learned only through years of hard experience is available to everyone from day one, in one place, at no cost, instead of scattered across the internet. We measure our progress not just in traffic or followers, but in dollars saved, bills successfully disputed, and people, patients and caregivers alike, who felt less alone navigating a system that was never built with them in mind and who felt truly heard when they shared their story .

Every story, tip, and resource on Health Savings Experts’ Central Hub starts with someone, a patient, a parent, a spouse, a caregiver, who lived it. We believe that is what makes the difference between generic advice and something that actually works. We collect what real patients, families, and caregivers have learned, often at real financial and emotional cost, and turn it into resources anyone can use for free. That includes tips for lowering prescription costs, guidance on appealing denied claims, directories of financial assistance programs, and the real, first-person stories that make all of it credible.

Our Pay It Forward Approach:Every small act of sharing creates a ripple. If this piece resonated with you, consider sending it to someone who might need the same hope today — or click on Share Your Story so thousands can benefit from it. No one should have to navigate the cost of illness alone.
